The promo image for Hogwarts Legacy features a familiar-looking tree. It resembles the Whomping Willow, which has led many fans to claim the lore of the game will not be accurate. Thanks to Avalanche’s community manager, all speculation has been put to rest.
Chandler Wood has confirmed in atweetthat the Whomping Willow is not in the game. An average tree is depicted in the promo image further below, not the angry tree from the stories. This contradicts the theories that the developers did not double-check their work.
The Whomping Willow wasn’t planted until 1971. Our game takes place about 80 years before that.I can’t confirm or deny specific secret passages, but I can say that the world is filled with secrets, mysteries, and nods to plenty of Wizarding World lore.

As you can see in the image below, it looks a lot like a special tree since it is all by itself. Wood has made clear that the Whomping Willow was not planted until 1971, 80 years after the game takes place.
It shows that the developers care a great deal about the Harry Potter lore that they know tidbits like that. Any theories that involve the developers not knowing certain facts should not be considered.
